Converting Australian credits
Earning credits while studying in Australia
It’s important to note that exact conversions might vary depending on specific institutional agreements, course structures, among Australian universities (as well as between faculties or departments within a university) so consulting with the relevant institutions or academic advisors is advisable for precise conversions.
Students usually take three to four classes and spend 12-16 hours in class per week during the 18-week semester in Australia. The unit of measurement for each class is called a credit point and varies by institution. Units (the equivalent to classes or modules) will vary in value between 10 and 60 credit points. If you are studying full-time, you are completing between 45 – 60 credit points per semester.
Credit systems are not universal so this is intended to be used as a guide only and actual credit equivalency may depend on:
- individual host institution credit system.
- unit content equivalency; and
- type of credit being sought, i.e. core unit or elective unit.
For instance, in Europe, a unit worth 15 Australian credit points has a value of 7.5 credits and would be approximately equivalent to 15 ECTS credits
